What is the Coalition?
Mission, Strategies and Achievements
  Our Guiding Principles

The following principles guide the projects and activities of the I-95 Corridor Coalition:

  • Add value to member agency programs
  • Leverage resources by investing in projects and activities of its members and private sector organizations
  • Achieve greater efficiency through coordinated deployments
  • Communicate, cooperate, coordinate and gain consensus
  • Serve as a neutral forum and honest broker
  Our Vision

Our vision is that the transportation network in the region will be safe, efficient, seamless, and intermodal, and will support economic growth in an environmentally responsive manner.

  Our Goals

Our goals are to improve mobility for people and goods, enhance safety for all travelers, and improve the economic vitality of the region.

Our Achievements – A Sample of Recent Activities

The Corridor’s extreme congestion and limited capacity to expand make Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) an essential element in regional growth and economic vitality. ITS can assist in keeping people and goods moving, even in the most congested segments of the Maine to Florida Corridor. The Coalition and its member agencies are using innovative technology, improved coordination and cooperation, system integration, incident management and new approaches to shared communication to provide a seamless and responsive transportation network. Both the traveling public and economy have benefited, and the results are saved time, saved money and saved lives.

Following are some of the I-95 Corridor Coalition’s program areas, each with significant achievements as detailed throughout this website:

Travel Information Dissemination

In addition to the development of a regional vehicle probe travel data collection and dissemination program, the Coalition’s activities include promotion of integrated 511 Corridor-wide information, travel information coordination efforts, and operation of this website to facilitate rapid distribution of current information.

Coordinated Operations

Traffic management, law enforcement and other incident response personnel assist each other when major incidents occur by sharing information and equipment. They meet regularly to discuss how emergencies can be handled more effectively

Intermodal Transportation

The Coalition is working to facilitate safe, efficient and reliable movement of people and goods across all modes. This includes projects to improve information at connections between rail and airport stations, and to improve the flow of freight and passenger traffic in the region to and around port areas.

  • Commercial Vehicle Operations Subcommittee: The Coalition supports efforts to improve safety and streamline operations of commercial vehicles through use of technology.

Education and Training

The Coalition provides training, best practices workshops/reports, and information exchange meetings related to improving management and operations for transportation.

Electronic Payment Services

The Coalition is supporting projects that advance interoperability between transit and toll agencies for bankcard/smart-card based fare payments

Information Systems

Development of both real-time and archived data sharing information systems is underway to assist member agencies with analysis, planning, long-distance travel information and incident management.

Safety

The Coalition serves as a vehicle for disseminating information about best practices and lessons learned from other safety initiatives in the region and assists members with identifying solutions to their safety needs.

  Our Strategies

Three strategies that the Coalition applies in defining work activities:

Strategy 1: Learning and Information Sharing

  • Facilitate communication and learning among members and partners
  • Conduct forums and provide training on topics of critical importance
  • Foster networking in support of sharing experiences and mutual education

Strategy 2: Information Management

  • Provide easier access to information for system management and operation
  • Provide a source of long-distance travel information that will be disseminated to the traveling public
  • Provide a source of information to support future investment decisions of the Coalition and its member agencies

Strategy 3: Facilitate Deployments across Jurisdictions and Modes

  • Promote multimodal and intermodal coordination
  • Encourage interoperability among jurisdictions
  • Foster adoption of standards and procedures that promote deployment
  • Coordinate information exchange to enhance the speed of deployment and seamless operations

Procedural Guidelines

The I-95 Corridor Coalition does not have a formal set of By-laws. However, since its establishment, the Coalition has adopted a number of procedures, policies and guidelines that determine the manner in which it operates. These operating guidelines have been compiled and are contained in the Procedural Guidelines Manual available as a PDF version. Since procedures are always being revised, this manual will be updated on an as-needed basis. Any comments or suggestions should be addressed to the current co-chairs of the Steering Committee or to any of the Coalition staff.
