DESCRIPTION

Project 19-7C: Additional StreetSmarts Sessions
The Street Smart Sessions which have been held in the Corridor to date have been extremely well-received by the Coalition Members. Nearly ten thousand high school students have attended Coalition-sponsored Street Smart Sessions at 22 high schools in 7 states (MD, VA, FL, GA, SC, NJ, and NY). High schools scheduled for the sessions were targeted based on evaluation of seat belt utilization and teen driver fatality statistics in the state’s geography. Due to the success of the program and its very positive reception by Coalition Members, the Safety Track recommends that additional funding be pursued for more Street Smart Sessions in the remaining Corridor States. Yr 19 funding enable Fall 2011/Spring 2012 sessions to be conducted. Average cost per day for these sessions is approximately $6,000 (includes travel), and this cost is being split 50-50 with project partner Anheuser-Busch, who arranges the sessions through their distributor network, obtaining high school permissions, scheduling, and clearances, etc. Thus, the average cost per day of sessions to the Coalition is approximately $3,000.

Project 18-7C: Conduct Additional Street Smart Sessions in the Corridor
The Street Smart Sessions which have been held in the Corridor to date have been extremely well-received by the Coalition Members. Nearly six thousand high school students have attended Coalition-sponsored Street Smart Sessions at 18 high schools in 4 states (MD, VA, FL, and GA), with two more states (NC and SC) scheduled for Fall, 2009 and additional states being scheduled for the Spring, 2010. These initial states were targeted based on evaluation of seat belt utilization and teen driver fatality statistics. Since the current project funding will be fully expended in 2010, the Safety Track recommends that additional funding be pursued for more Street Smart Sessions in the remaining Corridor States.

Project 15-7C: Conduct the StreetSmart Program in the Corridor
Seat belt usage and fatalities among teen drivers are targeted for improvement via this project. Originally presented to the I-95 Coalition at its December, 2006 Annual Meeting, and in partnership with Florida's Stay Alive From Education (SAFE) and Anheuser Busch's Awareness and Education programs, this project will analyze seat belt usage statistics and conduct StreetSmart Sessions in targeted jurisdictions throughout the Corridor.

Project activities include obtainment and analysis of pertinent data to identify prospective presentation locations; contact and coordination with the States to schedule and conduct the StreetSmart presentations; identification of and coordination with local high schools and colleges to encourage attendance including appropriate city/town/educational institution contact and coordination; DOT, law enforcement and public safety coordination; pre- and post- presentation statistical analyses, and other such activities as required to conduct the StreetSmart sessions.

Coalition Sponsorship of StreetSmart Teen Driving Program Begins with Florida Press Conference

Kevin Thibault, Assistant Secretary of Florida DOT and Vice Chair of the I-95 Corridor Coalition’s Executive Board, was who announced the kick-off of the Coalition’s sponsorship of the StreetSmart program. StreetSmart, presented by Stay Alive From Education, is a dramatic, gripping program taking young adults into the real-life drama experienced by firefighters/paramedics as they work to safe the lives of youth who have made poor choices when it comes to drinking or using drugs and failure to use seat belts.
