Vehicle Probe Data Collection project

I-95 Vehicle Probe ProjectThe I-95 Corridor Coalition’s Vehicle Probe project is a ground-breaking initiative, to provide comprehensive and continuous real-time travel information (travel times and speeds) to member agencies. The contract was awarded to Inrix Corporation in December 2007 and will begin providing traffic data for the core area by summer 2008.

The objective of this project is to acquire travel times and speeds using probe technology for both freeways and arterials. While the dominant source of data is obtained from fleet systems that use GPS to monitor vehicle location, speed, and trajectory, other data sources such as sensors are also used. The Inrix system fuses data from various sources to present a comprehensive picture of traffic flow.

Member agencies will benefit from the Probe Project by receiving travel times and speeds to support the dissemination of travel information using 511 and websites; display of travel times on variable message signs, traffic management during incidents and performance measurement. Coalition members will also be able to use this contract to expand travel data coverage within their jurisdictions, develop websites and interface with existing traffic management systems.

The system will initially cover a network of approximately 1500 miles of freeway and 1000 miles of arterial within a core area from New Jersey to North Carolina and could be expanded in the future. This core area was chosen based on the ability of Coalition members to integrate the data into their existing operations and to provide matching funds to expand coverage in their jurisdictions beyond that covered by the contract. The primary focus of the contract is the purchase of data.

Coalition funding is planned for the first three years of the ten year contract, with supplemental funding to be provided by Coalition members based on the success of the project and its critical role in corridor operations.
